Bregga, Action!Faatin, and Vars’s face are on the cover of Shining Ascension Issue #1, designed and painted by Nick Robles. Like the title says, there’s a lot to love about this art, but my favorite thing has to be Faatin’s smile. You can really see how she and Bregga have different personalities, but she always has Bregga’s back!
It’s been a joy to work with Nick, who is as professional as he is skilled. I can’t wait to see what he does next!
My next comic-related post will be less art, more information. What is this comic book project? What can you expect? What does “Shining Ascension” mean anyway? You’ll also hear from T. Hueston, the person who said, “There needs to be more kickass POC women in comics. Let’s make a comic book, Little Badger!” Yep, this project is Hueston’s baby – I’m along for the ride, haha.
Stay tuned! 😀
I’m excited to announce that Shining Ascension Issue #1 is (mostly) finished! Only the cover remains. As always, Nick has done beautiful work. I
Above: Sir Vars and Minister Mortikus play chess. They’re obviously party animals. By the way, I swear there’s a big fight scene in issue one. It’s not all chess. Not that I have anything against chess! I was in chess club during elementary school. 😀 Such fun.
Above: Faatin teaches Bregga the true meaning of friendship.
T. Hueston and I plan to complete the 1st Shining Ascension story arc over five additional comic books. I’m writing my dissertation this year (yay science), so we’ll continue working on SA in 2016. Here’s my question: should we wait a year to release Issue 1? Or should we provide the comic book (free PDF) immediately? It’s something to consider. If you have any suggestions, comment below, or contact me on Twitter … https://twitter.com/ShiningComic
Once again, the talented Asher Dumonchelle has drawn Bregga and Faatin, from Shining Ascension. There’s no official context for this image, so I made one up.
Faatin: Bregga, this parade is the worst. I can’t see anything. Humans are too tall.
Bregga: Okay. Hop on.
Faatin: Thank you! Much better. Uh oh.
Faatin: I think you have lice.
Faatin: Sorry! Sorry! It’s just dandruff. I can recommend something for that.
Bregga: … ;-;
The end. What an exciting tale.

The exceptional Nick Robles has been coloring Shining Ascension Issue One, and he shared this gorgeous full-page spread with me. Faatin (left, in blue) and Bregga (right) meet for the first time, just hours before a terrible battle! Ah, how dramatic! I love Nick’s work, as always. ❤
The comic book release date is approaching quickly, and I’m on tenterhooks to see the completed first issue. Stay tuned!
Fun fact: Faatin’s yasha (the big animal with a yellow bow) was inspired by prehistoric mammals, most notably Macrauchenia.
Sir Bregga Laydon, masterfully painted by C. Bedford. Bedford’s ethereal art can be viewed here: http://cbedford.deviantart.com/ Check it out! I also encourage you to view the full-size image above by clicking the picture: from the creases on Bregga’s hands to the links in her chainmail, the details in this portrait never fail to delight me.
The gold eye on Bregga’s chest represents the Bright One. Some worship him as a god, while others believe that he’s a powerful alien with mysterious goals. In issue one of the Shining Ascension comic series, he will break centuries of silence with a message for Bregga …
In the lead-up to issue one (available early 2015), I’ll be posting more character art by exceptional artists, so stay tuned!
Beautiful grayscale illustration of the characters Sir Bregga Laydon (left) and Faatin (right) by Asher Dumonchelle. They seem to be discussing important matters. Maybe Faatin is telling Bregga about the day she lost her eye!

Nick Robles has finished the pencil layouts of Shining Ascension Issue 1, and they look amaaaazing! I want to marry them! A battle, a heart-to-heart chat, a sexy*** chess game, and a life-changing visitation occur within the first twenty-two pages. Nick’s currently coloring his work. Once finished in early 2015, the comic book will be uploaded online, free to anybody interested in a fantasy adventure with diverse characters.
See you then! ❤
***Well, the sexy part may be debatable. XD
