Sick, Can’t Sleep, so I Drew A Picture

This is Irene. She might be tormented. She’s certainly haunted.

Colored pencils and pen. NyQuil made me do it. I have a head cold. It’s miserable!

A relaxing moment with Bregga, Faatin, and friends (and a wicked necromancer). Issue 2 draft is finished!

Dragon

Behold! A big battle from the Shining Ascension comic book series, to celebrate the completion of the second issue’s draft script. After some edits, the inking/coloring process will begin. I wish I had a time machine to see the final comic book immediately.

In the meantime, here’s a pivotal battle scene, lovingly created by the Spectacular Nick Robles! Don’t worry – that isn’t a real dragon. We’d never hurt a real dragon in this comic. Never!!!

Faatin, Bregga, and Vars appear in this battle, as well as some unknown friends. Can you find them all?

Bregga by Needlesslycryptic: O, MY HEART! I am slain by its beauty.

Bregga

The Watson to my Holmes***, T. Hueston, commissioned a special piece of art from Needlesslycryptic: Sir Bregga Laydon as the Knight of Swords tarot card. Everything about this art – the colors, the texture, beauty of Bregga’s noble expression – is so gorgeous, I may cry. At the very least, I’ll make it my desktop background. Check out Needlesslycryptic’s tumblr: http://needlesslycryptic.tumblr.com/ It’s a treasure!

By the way, Bregga is a protagonist in the Shining Ascension comic book series, an ongoing fantasy project. Read more about it here and here.

***T. Hueston and I decided that I’m Holmes, because I’m morose, solitary, and intelligent, and Hueston is Watson, because they are brave, wise, and good-hearted. Also, Hueston is a doctor. Obvious choice.

Hella Cool Update: Comic Coloring Finished!

I’m excited to announce that Shining Ascension Issue #1 is (mostly) finished! Only the cover remains. As always, Nick has done beautiful work. I

Vars+MinisterAbove: Sir Vars and Minister Mortikus play chess. They’re obviously party animals. By the way, I swear there’s a big fight scene in issue one. It’s not all chess. Not that I have anything against chess! I was in chess club during elementary school. 😀 Such fun.

Faatin+BreggaAbove: Faatin teaches Bregga the true meaning of friendship.

T. Hueston and I plan to complete the 1st Shining Ascension story arc over five additional comic books. I’m writing my dissertation this year (yay science), so we’ll continue working on SA in 2016. Here’s my question: should we wait a year to release Issue 1? Or should we provide the comic book (free PDF) immediately? It’s something to consider. Bregga and Faatin Watch a Parade: New Art by Asher Dumonchelle

Faatin_Breg

Once again, the talented Asher Dumonchelle has drawn Bregga and Faatin, from Shining Ascension. There’s no official context for this image, so I made one up.

Faatin: Bregga, this parade is the worst. I can’t see anything. Humans are too tall.

Bregga: Okay. Hop on.

Faatin: Thank you! Much better. Uh oh.

Bregga: What?

Faatin: I think you have lice.

Bregga: !

Faatin: Sorry! Sorry! It’s just dandruff. I can recommend something for that.

Bregga: … ;-;

The end. What an exciting tale.

Comic Book Update: Colors!

Shining Ascension_Issue1_Page02_1500

The exceptional Nick Robles has been coloring Shining Ascension Issue One, and he shared this gorgeous full-page spread with me. Faatin (left, in blue) and Bregga (right) meet for the first time, just hours before a terrible battle! Ah, how dramatic! I love Nick’s work, as always. ❤

The comic book release date is approaching quickly, and I’m on tenterhooks to see the completed first issue. Stay tuned!

Fun fact: Faatin’s yasha (the big animal with a yellow bow) was inspired by prehistoric mammals, most notably Macrauchenia.
